What’s changing under the new demerit points system
The Driver Improvement Points System, or DIPS, is getting stricter. Non-probationary drivers will now be suspended after just 18 demerit points, down from 24. Probationary drivers face an even lower bar, dropping from 13 points to 12.
Traffic Police say the change follows a worrying rise in accidents. Road deaths hit a 10-year high of 149 in 2025, up from 142 the year before. Injuries climbed too, from 9,342 cases to 9,955.
Under the tighter rules, common combinations of offences can trigger an immediate suspension. Running a red light while speeding, for example, now adds up to the maximum in one incident. The Safe Driving Course, once a way to shorten a suspension, will also be phased out for offences committed from 1 January 2027, replaced by the DIPS Retraining Course.
